Safety Features to Look Out for When Hiring a Forklift

Veronica Leon

In an ordinary business setting, forklifts may look like a traditional tool or vehicle. However, stepping into the machine, fastening the seatbelt and doing a little test run under supervision will make you change that perception. It will help you understand the reason forklifts are classified under heavy machinery and equipment. They boast of immense power, which is a good thing for your business because the machine will be dependable. On the other hand, too much firepower comes with lots of operational risks for your workers. It is imperative to pay attention to safety features when hiring a forklift for use in your business facility. Here are the things you should prioritise:

Strong Canopy

Forklift safety begins in the canopy where the operators spend most, if not all their time. When hiring pay attention to the top part of the operator's cabin. The canopy is meant to protect the operator against falling loads. They also minimise the risk of injuries to the operator in case the forklift rolls over during operations. Ideally, the canopy should be sturdy, crack free, corrosion free and made from strong materials such as reinforced aluminium or steel. This will offer a reliable level of protection.

Speed Limiters

Considering that your forklifts will be carrying heavy loads, it is vital to keep speed in check. This will minimise the possibility of rolling over and collisions n the workplace. Speed limiters restrict the speed of the forklift depending on the weight of the load. In this way, you reduce the chance of human error because the speed of the machine is not at the discretion of the operator. Speed limiters come in handy when you are working with newbie forklift operators who are likely to make mistakes.

Wide Field of View

Even though the forklift should have sturdy guards for the safety of the operator, a wide line of sight is equally important for safe operation. The operator should be able to drive around without bumping into objects even when they are carrying huge loads. An adequate line of sight also allows the operator to load and unload with improved accuracy.

Lighting

Lighting is equally important when using a forklift, especially when you are using it in an area with poor natural lighting. When hiring, make sure that the machine has both rear and forward facing lights. They will come in handy when driving it forwards or in reverse motion.

Upgrades and Safety Innovations to Heavy Construction Equipment

As a manager of a construction site, you have a lot of liability as well as a responsibility to your employees, and it's critical to take those matters seriously. Hi, my name is Marc, and I used to manage a construction company. A few years ago, I changed courses and starting working as a medical tech in an emergency department. Seeing a lot of injured people prompts me to think of the importance of safety, and in light of my previous experiences, I think a lot about the safety of construction work. I wanted to explore this topic through writing so I decided to start this blog. Here, I plan to focus on upgrades and innovations throughout the construction equipment industry and possibly provide a few extra safety tips as well. I hope you enjoy reading.
