Take These Tips Seriously for Safer Operation of Truck Cranes

Veronica Leon

When it comes to lifting and moving of heavy materials, objects and other loads at construction sites, truck-mounted cranes are a popular choice of work equipment. Mobile cranes are highly revered in the construction industry because of their mobility. As their name suggests, truck-mounted cranes also simply known as truck cranes, are basically cranes mounted on a heavy-duty truck, modified to have a working section comprising a cantilevered boom that swivels or swings from side to side during crane operation.

If you're considering hiring truck cranes for your construction job, keeping your employees safe should be a top-of-mind priority for you and your construction company. Here are a number of tips you can follow to ensure the safety of all employees present onsite while truck crane operations are ongoing.

Develop and implement a safe work system.

Before renting truck cranes for your construction job, it is important that you devise and implement systems to ensure the safety of all staff present in the workplace. For you to come up with a safe system of work, you need to identify all risks related to the use of construction equipment. Generally speaking, a safe system of work should include but is not limited to: proper preparation of the jobsite; planning of all lifting operations; selection of the right truck crane; planning of crane maintenance; performing of all tests required to ensure the equipment is in good working condition; provision of certified crane operators and competent supervisory personnel; and preventing unauthorised operation of the crane. These safe work procedures can go a long way towards keeping all onsite workers out of harm's way.

Consider wet hiring.

When hiring heavy construction equipment, construction professionals have to choose from between two options — wet hiring and dry hiring. Wet hiring involves renting the equipment you need together with certified operators to operate it. Dry hiring, on the other hand, involves renting equipment without the complementary staff required to operate it. As you should not leave anything to chance when it comes to the safety of your construction employees, it is best to wet hire truck cranes. This way, you don't need to worry about finding well-trained and experienced operators for your crane operation.

Truck cranes are indispensable equipment when it comes to lifting and moving of heavy loads at the construction site, but they can also be major safety hazards if not used the right way. So, make sure to take the above safety tips very seriously.

I wanted to explore this topic through writing so I decided to start this blog. Here, I plan to focus on upgrades and innovations throughout the construction equipment industry and possibly provide a few extra safety tips as well. I hope you enjoy reading.
